历史 of the 森林 College

森林 College is the fourth-oldest school at this university. 电子游戏软件 began offering under电子游戏正规平台生 classes at alternative times—late afternoon or evening--in 1929, through what was then known as 电子游戏软件 Intown, and later as the Evening College. 

随着时间的推移, the scope of the offerings grew, 1996年, the school's name was changed from Evening College to the College of Advancing Studies, to reflect our evolving mission and our expanded academic program, which by then included both bachelor's and master's degrees.

In keeping with the Jesuit educational tradition of 电子游戏软件, the 森林 College prepares students for citizenship, 服务, and leadership in a global society.

44年来,Fr. 詹姆斯一. 森林,年代.J., led our school as dean, shaping the foundation of personalized care, 指导, and encouragement that to this day defines our culture.

The namesake of 森林 College was 电子游戏软件’s longest-serving dean—beginning his tenure in April 1968 and retiring in the spring of 2012. 在那段时间里. 森林 directed comprehensive curriculum changes, designed and introduced a 电子游戏正规平台生 degree program for part-time students, established numerous scholarship and endowment funds, and had an immeasurable impact on thousands of students, 教员, 和工作人员.

A native of Dorchester’s Neponset neighborhood, Fr. 森林 attended 电子游戏软件 High School before earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from 电子游戏软件. He later acquired a doctorate in education from Boston University and taught at the former Jesuit-run Cranwell School in Lenox, 麻萨诸塞州.

Fr. 森林 entered the Society of Jesus in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1961; he served as provincial secretary of the New England Province of the Society of Jesus from 1962 to 1968.

灵感来自Fr. 森林’s outstanding leadership and the educational opportunities that 森林 College makes possible, 凯瑟琳B. 罗伯特·M. Devlin made a generous gift in April 2002 that formally renamed the college.

Fr. 森林 served as a mentor to two generations of the Devlin family. Bob Devlin—chairman of Curragh Capital Partners and former chairman, 总统, and CEO of American General Corporation—first met Fr. 森林 in the 1950s as a student at the Cranwell School in Lenox, 麻萨诸塞州, where Fr. 树林里教.

Kate and Bob’s sons, Michael and Matt, each 电子游戏正规平台生d from 电子游戏软件. Michael received a communications degree from the Evening College (the 森林 College’s previous name) under the direction of Fr. 森林.
